Who Are Thermal Engineering
Founded in 1991, Thermal Engineering started small with a strong focus on thermal control. In just 10 years, we expanded with a water treatment division. However, it was in 2007 that a few significant changes took place, including becoming a distributor for both York and Fluid Chillers Australia. These changes prompted the movement towards Air Cooled Chillers, resulting in the fabrication of the first mining chiller that same year.
In 2011, the decision to focus solely on mining and industrial chillers was made. Fast forward to 2023, we are now a direct vendor to BHP, FMG, Rio Tinto, and Roy Hill – all Tier 1 miners. We also work with Tier 2 and 3 miners, along with other firms requiring premium chillers.

Learn More About Our Projects
Thermal Engineering has been around for more than 30 years, an adequate time for us to forge and retain relationships with some of the best in the mining, industrial, and commercial worlds. For this, we have worked with companies in designing and delivering a chiller solution that meets their requirements.
We have provided chillers across WA and beyond with strong relationships with Roy Hill, FMG, BHP and Rio Tinto. We have also consistently worked with many worldclass crusher manufacturers such as Metso Australia, FLSmidth and Sandvik, where we have managed their equipment cooling requirements.
We were engaged to provide cooling solutions across a wide range of crushing operations at Mount Whaleback. Utilising various size chillers from Thermals range the site has units from 115kw to 200kW.
Our goal was to provide a cooling solution for a crusher on a gold mine. A HM115 chiller was selected to provide the 115kW of cooling demand whilst installed in dry and dusty conditions with temperatures reaching towards 50C.
The South Flank project was Thermal Engineering’s largest order of IPA/HM Chillers at the time of order and were built to service the BHP – South Flank project which was the largest iron ore built in WA in last 50 years
Thermal Engineering was engaged to provide cooling solutions for the crushing operations at Rio Tinto’s flagship Iron Ore mine – Gudai-Darri. Thermal Engineering selected, engineered and supplied our 200kW Chillers to support both primary and secondary crushing operations.
Thermal Engineering was engaged by a water treatment contractor to provide an air-cooled chiller to supplement their offer of a safety shower network on the Roy Hill Mine site. With high ambient temperatures of 50°C and a list of mine site specifications to be adhered to Thermal proposed one of our Light Mining (LM) chillers. The 107kW base cooling capacity was provided by a CA115 model chiller manufactured in Victoria, Australia.
As the site ran multiple crushers that required multiple cooling temperatures a custom solution was required to take the constant 10°C water produced by the chillers and create appropriate process cooling water loops that were at the correct temperatures. Thermal Engineering designed a skid that utilised insulated tanks, duty/standby pumps, heat exchangers and actuated valves to suit the customer’s requirements.

Cooling systems are essential across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Whether it’s keeping homes comfortable, maintaining the right climate in office spaces, or ensuring machinery doesn’t overheat, choosing the right cooling system is critical. The two most common solutions are chiller systems and air conditioning (AC) units. While both serve the same purpose—cooling spaces—they operate […]
When deciding between air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, understanding their key differences can help you choose the right solution for your cooling needs. Key Summary Air-cooled chillers use fans for heat dissipation, making them compact, cost-effective, and easier to maintain. However, they can be noisier and less efficient for large-scale operations. In contrast, water-cooled chillers […]
